Advisor Advice: Invest in Your Chapter, Invest in Yourself

Meet the Wisconsin Region’s guest blogger, Shawn Sullivan, from Northcentral Technical College:

I have worked in my current position at Northcentral Technical College for over 13 years and have been one of our Phi Theta Kappa advisors since we chartered over 10 years ago. In that time, I have challenged myself to find and participate in professional development opportunities that help me serve my students and my college more effectively.

Often times, great intentions give way to reality and work load and I found myself limited in my time to spend on these opportunities. When I heard about the Five Star Advisor program I checked it out and realized I could do this easily and at my own pace to make sure the other things in my world received the necessary attention.

It was so easy to register and get started! Instructions were clear and each lesson built to the next one. As a more “veteran” advisor, I understand much of how Phi Theta Kappa operates, but really found the tips that dealt with helping my students be more active online and with social media extremely helpful. It’s so important to evolve with trends, and this training helped me think about not only what’s happening today with my chapter, but how I can position the group for future success as well.

In my opinion, new advisors will find much-appreciated information on how to support developing their chapters and how to successfully–and actively–participate in the Five-Star Chapter Program for their chapters. It’s definitely a roadmap for success!

I successfully completed the Five Star Advisor Plan on September 5, and now, all of the modules are open for Advisor use. Please consider completing this training to invest not only in your chapter, but your own development as an advisor and a leader on your campus!
